Ozempic is a prescription medicine indicated for the treatment of insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus (in adults) as an adjunct to diet and exercise and also to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) (heart related) events in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established CV disease. Ozempic contains the active substance Semaglutide which is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Semaglutide works by binding to and activating the GLP-1 receptor, thereby stimulating insulin secretion and reducing blood glucose.
Ozempic® is used on its own – if your blood sugar is not controlled well enough by diet and exercise alone, and you cannot use it with metformin (another diabetes medicine) or with other medicines for diabetes – when they are not enough to control your blood sugar levels. These other medicines may include: oral antidiabetics (such as metformin, thiazolidinediones, sulfonylureas, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor) or insulin.
