What Are the Benefits of Vitamin D?
- Vitamin D is also known as the sunshine vitamin, or the sun vitamin. This is because the body produces the vitamin D it needs when our skin is directly exposed to sunlight. When ultraviolet B (UVB) rays hit receptor cells in the skin, they trigger a chemical reaction which produces vitamin D3.
- This means that it can be difficult to get the vitamin D we need, especially during the winter months or if you do not get to spend much time outside. Since it can therefore be a challenge to get enough vitamin D via sunlight alone, the NHS recommends that everyone in the UK should take a vitamin D supplement during the winter months, from October to March, in order to keep their levels topped up.
